A round of Amersfoort: what is there to do?

If you drop a pin exactly in the middle of the map of the Netherlands… then there is the medieval city of Amersfoort! With its canals, countless monuments, cozy terraces and shops, Amersfoort is the perfect city for a weekend away. With a new Bastion Hotel coming up, we're doing a tour of Amersfoort!

A walk along the hotspots

When you walk through Amersfoort, you immediately come face to face with its rich history and historic city center. Amersfoort is a medieval city and it shows. The showpiece of the city is the Koppelpoort. The gate was built between 1380 and 1425 and is a combination of a land and water gate. It is the only one in the Netherlands!

The Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren is really not to be missed when you are in the center of Amersfoort. The iconic tower is almost a hundred meters high, has about a hundred bells and forms the center of the Netherlands! The tower is nicknamed Lange Jan and dates from 1444. Climb the tower and be surprised by the beautiful view.

For fun you have to be on De Hof: the largest square in the center of Amersfoort. Here you will find cozy pubs, restaurants and dance cafés. On Friday and Saturday you will find all kinds of market stalls on the Hof. From fresh fruit and vegetables to delicious cheese and freshly roasted nuts. Amersfoort also lends itself as a perfect shopping city. The Krommestraat and Langestraat are the nicest shopping streets of Amersfoort where you will find all kinds of fashion stores, but also small boutiques and specialty shops.

Dive into the life of Piet Mondrian

Did you know that Piet Mondrian was born in Amersfoort? He is one of the most famous Dutch painters. You will probably recognize his works of art by the yellow, red, black, blue and gray compositions. Does the painting Victory Boogie Woogie ring a bell with you? At the Mondriaan House you can take a look at his birthplace and discover everything about the work and life of the painter.

Do you want to experience even more culture? Amersfoort is rich in museums! Also check out Museum Flehite and Kunsthal kAdE. Museum Flehite takes you to the history of Amersfoort and is seen as the house for art and history. The special thing about this museum is that it is housed in three Muurhuizen. Kunsthal kAdE is the place to be for exhibitions about modern and contemporary art.

The beating cultural heart

Fancy a night out? The theaters in Amersfoort are bustling with surprising performances. From concerts to club nights and from opera to dance; in the theaters the offer is enormously diverse. The Flint is also called the Theater Heart of Amersfoort. It is a theater and hall complex where various performances and events are held. Nature lover? Amersfoort and the surrounding area have so many beautiful places to offer. In Amersfoort you will find several parks such as the Schothorst park, Little Switzerland and the Randenbroek park. You will also find larger nature reserves such as Birkhoven. In the vicinity of Amersfoort you can walk over the Soesterduinen, Utrechtse Heuvelrug or discover the Hoge Veluwe on two wheels. At the Soesterduinen you can enjoy walking, cycling, kite flying and climbing. What makes the area so special? It is characterized by sand drifts, forests and heathland.
